Learning at Home

Learning at Home
Family Learning
A Learning Society is one in which everyone is able to both benefit from and contribute to the flows of knowledge and information on which our future depends.
In other words every person is an active learner.

The key to creating the learning society is to seek the learning potential in everyday situations. 23

Learning at home forms a vital part of this learning culture
What are the strands of Family learning?

* Health and education advice to pregnant mothers.
* Birth to five education and health support for parents.
* Continued learning for parents through the support of health visitors and other
  professionals.
* A focus on real parental involvement in schools through home school learning
agreements and other means. This does not just cast parents in the role of
supporter to the School Improvement process but recognises and supports the
unique role that parents have to play in their own children's' learning.
* Extra provision for family learning in the form of family holiday courses, specific
courses and classes for parents both in the curriculum and in explanation of the
teaching and learning styles being used - now!
* Training for parents - many of whom feel that they have fallen behind in the
Learning Society. They need to value their own contribution to the child's
learning for it to be valued in return.
* Time. Families must be helped through all means possible, to find the time to
  support learning in the home.
