Energy Conservation is an important part of moving towards more sustainable forms of living, reducing our consumption of resources and safeguarding the needs of future generations.

 

The Energy Conservation Team in Dorset provides free advice to Dorset Schools. Services include:
A demonstration trailer with:
Low energy lighting.
Insulation and draught proofing.
Domestic heating controls display.
Domestic water use display.
Astra and the Waste Monster.
An emotive and entertaining puppet show on the themes of energy and the environment designed for 8-13 year olds.
Energy Savers Teachers Pack (KS 2 and KS 3)
A free teachers pack designed for schools with provision of free inset training and computer software.
Links to the National Curriculum include Science, Design and Technology, Geography and IT.

Day visits and general educational enquiries, Christine McLennan: Eco Cabins School and college students can visit the centre for day visits or residential stays on the site, many of them now in the Eco Cabins, where they can control and monitor their own energy system. CAT also produces publications for pupils, teachers and for general and specialist interest and sells a variety of other educational publications through its mail order service. Education staff from CAT are available to deliver the programme developed by CSE and the London Borough of Croydon. CAT can offer this on its own site or elsewhere.

Eco-Schools is a European initiative to help schools become environmentally friendly in both the curriculum and the management of the school. An Eco-Schools flag is awarded to schools which fulfil the criteria. There are currently 900 schools in the UK and a further 2000 in the rest of Europe who have received such an award.

The Energy Saving Trust's objective is to promote the efficient use of energy in the UK by domestic companies and small businesses. The Trust is currently running a 'Schools Cashback' scheme, which invites schools to apply for a rebate on installed energy efficiency measures. Groundwork is a UK environmental partnership organisation active in 150 towns and cities throughout the country. Groundwork's approach is to devise programmes which link environmental, social and economic regeneration and contribute to sustainable development. One of these programmes is the Esso YES programme supported by Esso UK plc. In the areas that YES is running, the school programme and support will be free, otherwise Groundwork can work with a Local Authority to seek partnerships within the community to help fund the programme. Groundwork also runs a one day teachers training day. The Groundwork Guides will arrange a whole day of training for teachers from all the schools in the area where the programme is being implemented. The training will cover general energy principles, Energy and the National Curriculum, details of running an Esso YES programme and case studies. SHEEP Ltd is a not for profit company with charitable aims set up in November 1996.
