A DAY AS VICTORIANS!

Year 4 arrived at school wearing Victorian clothes ready to visit the Priest’s House Museum in Wimborne. They pretended they were Victorian pupils in the school room and Mrs Moss was their very strict teacher. The benches were hard and uncomfortable. They had to keep their backs straight all the time and keep their hands flat on the desks. The children didn’t think they could keep silent all day long like Victorian children.
They practised using copperplate writing on slates using slate pencils. Tanya, who is left-handed found it especially hard as she had to use her right hand because Victorians didn’t approve of being left-handed. There were punishments like being made to wear a dunce’s cap and standing in the corner, and everyone was afraid of the cane. If you were able to get to school every day on time you would be given a medal at the end of term.
Other rooms in the Priest’s House are the ironmongers, the kitchen and the childhood gallery. In the kitchen everyone helped to make lemonade, biscuits and toasted bread. It was so different in Victorian times without electricity.Year 4 enjoyed being Victorian pupils for the day but think they prefer school as it is now.

FAITH IN ACTION

On 29th September 2003 we celebrated Harvest Festival in Hampreston Church with our families and friends. One by one every pupil took fruit, vegetables or cans up the aisle while a recorder group played. Amy, one of the recorder players, said ‘My heart was thumping’. Members of Year 4 read lines from Matthew’s Gospel. The younger children sang ‘Here are red apples’ and Key Stage 2 sang ‘When I needed a Neighbour’.

Major Cyril Chadwick from the Salvation Army came to tell us about day centres in church which help people by giving them food and shelter, or helping them to make friends. They also help people who have problems coping or getting about on their own. Major Chadwick is going to take our food to cook for people living on the streets. Mrs Tyler ended our celebration with a prayer thanking God for providing our food and homes.

INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL WEEK
6TH-10TH October

128 children from Hampreston School met in Haskins car park to walk to school on Tuesday 7th October. We had to meet at 8.15am, quite an early start! It looked great as we walked along Ham Lane, across the field and down the church drive to school. It was like a gigantic red snake winding its way to Hampreston!

For further details of our walk and other schools’ activities, see our environment supplement inside.

FISH FLYING IN BELL TOWER!

Year 4 were thrilled when Mark the builder brought a fish into school! It is the pattern he will use to make twelve fish which will decorate the bell tower. The fish will remind us of Jesus’ twelve disciples.

We interviewed Mark about his plans for the teachers’ car park. He will start building on November 10th, but doesn’t know how long the work will take. He said there are two problems: clearing the vegetation from the site and making it level. We think it will be good because we will have all of the playground to play in when the teachers’ cars have moved to the new car park.
