The World Music Week Project

The project is based on songwriting. Staff and children at Bridport schools and schools in The Gambia, India and Chile will be exploring their own history and tradition to create poems, songs and music that will then be shared and fused.

The Traditional Arts Project organisation (T.A.P.S.) with much experience of similar projects and a good track record will develop this work and much of our funding (£10,000) is going to them to do this.

  • T.A.P.S. to select countries by Christmas and indicate this to all schools to give staff opportunity to plan a research project. This will be as long as schools wish – from a half-day familiarisation study to a more extensive study unit. T.A.P.S. staff to travel to their countries and set up project links in their schools.
  • During weeks beginning Feb 27th and March 5th – ONE WORLD BAND visited each school  to perform to all children, talk about instruments and cultures they come from and held songwriting workshops with smaller groups.Billy Bragg Photo
  • Staff had twilight song-writing workshops in three key stage groups led by Billy Bragg, David Powell and T.A.P.S. staff during this period.

Roger sang his own song 'Lowlands' at the workshops

Roger and Mauricio demonstrated a duet on the pan pipes

  • World musicians supporting children and schools in their own countries between March and June, developing links and attempting to communicate using digital audio/picture video links – uploading to our website. It is also intended to send out local people with laptops, cellphones and sound/ vision kit to attempt direct links.
  • Staff support children in exploring our tradition to create words/songs/poems/music. Our children to explore what it means to be ‘English’ in 2001.

WORLD MUSIC WEEK

UPDATE  16 MARCH 2001

  • The One World Band workshops and INSET have been a great success.
  • Bridport Primary and St Mary’s have been drawn into the project, as has The Sir John Colfox School. The two town Primaries are going to create K.S. 1 & 2 songs and select one of each for each school. Combined town K.S.1 & K.S.2 choirs will then perform these 4 songs at the Friday concert.
  • A local band (One teacher from each school + Billy Bragg + David Powell) will be set up to provide backing for their songs. Billy has agreed to play on a couple of these numbers, but timetabling would have to be strict to allow him to arrive at gig, perform and leave quickly.
  • The Heads of Music and Expressive Arts at The Sir John Colfox School have arranged for Roger Watson and Billy Bragg to provide songwriting workshops for students. Billy and the Blokes will then be installed at Bridport Arts Centre for the whole of the week in June leading up to the concert. They will rehearse the Colfox students and this work will culminate in an evening performance at the Centre on the Friday.
  • The One World Band will rehearse each Cluster school for ½ a day from Mon-Wed. They would work on the K.S. 1 and 2 songs already selected by the schools with Leon’s support. These songs would be digitally recorded at the end of the ½ day. Schools could also invite parents in to see songs performed at the end of these sessions.
  • Thursday would see the full Cluster choir rehearsing all day with One World Band in preparation for Friday’s gig. The town schools would also create K.S. 1 & 2 choirs and they would also be rehearsed on Thursday with their band.
  • Friday 10.00 a.m. One World Band and Cluster Choirs will rehearse at Leisure Centre - 11.30 Town Choirs rehearse, leaving band & choir set up ready to perform. Schools arrive at 12.00.
  • Probable timetable is as follows - Town songs perform first at 12.30 – 1.00 - 15 minute break then Cluster K.S. 1 choir performs from 1.15 – 1.45 15 minute break and Cluster K.S.2 choir perform from 2.00 – 2.40. Schools prepare for 3.00 departure.

The final indoor rehearsals of the town and cluster schools will be digitally recorded Christine Page from D.M.S. will support choir on Thursday, and will be around on the Wednesday also to help rehearsals. Sean O’ Connell, also from D.M.S. (Music Technology) will also be supporting recordings at this time. The Colfox work will also need to be recorded at the end of the rehearsal week. These recordings will form the basis for two CDs . One C.D. will feature the 12 Cluster songs with the 12 songs from our partner schools. The other will feature the town schools’ songs with the Colfox/ Billy Bragg songs. Billy and Roger will use their professional judgement to consider any extra orchestration to the songs after the project. The final CD’s will then go on release to parents and friends before Christmas, with all profits going to our partner schools.

  • All children will be invited to design a World Music Week T-shirt. Each school to hold internal competition with the winner being submitted for final judging by Roger and Billy. This shirt will be printed and sold to children at cost to wear at the concert. All performers who have not bought a shirt will be given one for the duration of the concert.
  • The Bridport Chamber of Trade is backing the week and shops are to be approached to see if they will host window displays that classes/ schools could provide for them informing the Bridport public about the project, the music and the countries involved.
