Greenford's Geography Project

Cluster Schools

Children in Class 3 and 4 (Years 3, 4 and 5) have recently studied a Geography unit called “Should a bypass be built around Maiden Newton?” All the work we did was based on this question and we had to think about what the village is already like, who uses the village and whether we need a new road around the village to link Dorchester with Crewkerne without traffic going through Maiden Newton.  We have developed our mapping skills (reading and drawing maps), questioning techniques (designing and carrying out a survey), observation skills (walking around the village and thinking about the effects of traffic), speaking and listening (discussion groups and debates) graphing skills (drawing bar graphs and pictograms from data collected) and persuasive writing skills (writing a letter for or against the proposed bypass to the local council).

Have a look at the different types of work we did…
