Our visit to Streetwise

In February 2003, Year 2 children from our Cluster Schools went to Streetwise, an interactive safety centre, in Bournemouth. Read what some of the children got up to and what they learnt.
Yesterday, we year two children went to Streetwise in Bournemouth.  First we had to line up in twos and get on to the bus. Erin was my partner.  It was quite a long ride to Bournemouth, we got very tired.  

When we got there we had to go and sit down while listening to a man telling us how to BE WISE!  Later on, we went into a GREAT BIG room which had lots of sorts of places with fake people.  There was a building side, a park and other places where you learn how to be streetwise.  First my group went to the park.  We learnt how to keep places clean: because it was very untidy.  Next we went to a railway,  you had to clap to make a spider come down.  We learnt the same as at the park and also not to walk on railway lines.  Later we went to a garden.  It looked quite nice but we learnt not to leave things like garden rake spikes up as you could hurt yourself.  We went in a house. The worse room was the kitchen.  We learnt to put things away from fire as they could catch fire and set the house on fire. Later we went to a phone box and phoned 999.  We saw a stranger and we said "GO AWAY!".  Next we went to a farm and then to a sort of garden for everybody.

Yesterday we went to a place called Streetwise on the bus.  It was a long way to get there.  When we got there we listened to what someone had to say. After we had a little snack.  I was sorted into a group with a leader called Mavis.  First my group went to a very untidy beach. We also watched a short rescue on TV.  After that we went to an unsafe building site and I learnt you must wear thicker boots, not trainers because there was a trainer with a nail right through it.  Then we went to a park with litter all over it and the slide was all netted up.

First we went on the bus to Streetwise.  It was a long time.  Then we got there.  We had a talk and a snack.  After that we opened some doors and it was like a village.  First we went to a farm.  We learnt that we must not go in front of a tractor. Next we went to a beach.  We said you must not put rubbish on the floor.  Someone was having a picnic and they were blocking the lifeboat.  After that we went to the building site.  They said nails could stick out and you could get hurt. Then we went to a town.  We talked about crossing the road safely.  So then we went to a park and there was rubbish at the park.  A stranger came and then we went to a garden and we saw a barking dog.  We went into the house and saw things that needed to be put away from small children.  We had some lunch and that was the end of the day.
